Report: Tottenham could now sign the 'best midfielder in Europe' for less than £45m this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to bolster their ranks further in the summer transfer window after a season of improvement.

Ange Postecoglou has impressed in his maiden season at Spurs, quickly turning things around at N17 and getting them within touching distance of the top four.

Indeed, Tottenham were early pacesetters and potential dark horses for the title at one point. Although this didn’t last, they’re still doing much better than last season.

Spurs were busy last summer and also in the January transfer window, one of the Premier League clubs for whom that was the case.

We’re likely to see some new arrivals in midfield, particularly with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seemingly facing an uncertain future at Tottenham.

And one midfielder Spurs are said to be monitoring could potentially be signed for less than £45million.

The player in question is Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, who recently helped put Liverpool to the sword in the Europa League.

Tuttosport reported in February that Tottenham have ‘knocked on the door’ of the Italian club about the 26-year-old.

Now, journalist Rudy Galetti has reported that bidding for Koopmeiners will start at around £43million.

Taking to X, the Italian reporter also said Atalanta are open to letting the Dutchman leave, and that Chelsea and Juventus are among those interested.

What could Teun Koopmeiners bring to Tottenham this summer?

Koopmeiners has been shining for Atalanta, registering 112 appearances, 26 goals and 12 assists for the Bergamo club. He also has 20 Netherlands caps to his name.

Back in 2021, Total Football Analysis wrote: “The Dutchman is an extremely composed and cultured player at the base of midfield.

“And since he is left-footed and can drop back to play at centre-back as well, there have been some comparisons to his compatriot Daley Blind, as well as to Nemanja Matic.”

Atalanta hero Domenico Progna previously described the reported Tottenham target as “extraordinary“,

Meanwhile, Koopmeiners’ agent Bert Baving has likened him to Toni Kroos, Jorginho, Nemanja Matic and Manuel Locatelli.

And Italian football expert Alvise Cagnazzo has written in the Daily Mail: “Koopmeiners is the best midfielder in Europe in terms of performance.

“He has physical strength and technical quality, while tactically he is a central midfielder who with time and experience has come to understand how to be the decisive element.

“In Serie A, he has scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 27 games. He looks like ‘Robocop’, has a physique of steel and will probably be the player to build a cage next to.”
