'You never know...': Danny Rohl hints at potential Sheffield Wednesday exit amid Sunderland links

Danny Rohl has issued a hint on his future following reports linking him with a move away from Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl joined Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, after leaving his role as assistant manager of the German national team.

While the Owls still sit a point from safety at the bottom of the Championship, the 34-year-old has done a magnificent job and is well loved at Hillsborough.

Fans are desperate for Rohl to stay beyond this summer, but his future is in doubt and he could well make a swift exit if they are relegated.

Rohl’s impressive job at Wednesday certainly won’t go unnoticed and he is likely to attract interest from the Championship and his native Germany, while reports in recent months have claimed that Sunderland are one club interested.

The Black Cats are looking for a new permanent manager this summer and believe Rohl fits their model perfectly.

Danny Rohl admits ‘you never know what’s going to happen’

The German has said very little on his future and supporters are still hopeful he will still if they can stay up, but whether that happens could well go down to the final day – when they travel to Sunderland.

Rohl has now provided a hint though, with the coach speaking to The Times about his family remaining in Germany during his time with the Owls.

“I think for my kids, it’s been hard,” he said. “My goal is to bring them here. But in Southampton we got a house and not long after, we went to Munich. You never know what’s going to happen in football.”

Is the German on his way to Sunderland?

Every manager in football will know that they can’t predict what is going to happen, and every fan will understand that too.

However, Rohl’s hesitance to bring his family over this season has suggested he could well be on his way this summer.

There’s no chance of him being sacked, so if he was dead set on remaining at Hillsborough for another year, then he would surely have set up home in the city.

Though them remaining in Germany could also hint that he may return to his home country, as a move to Sunderland wouldn’t exactly require much upheaval for his family if they had moved to Sheffield already.

It wouldn’t really surprise anyone if he didn’t want to manage in League One though, so Sheffield Wednesday‘s only real option is to stay up and hope the fans and players’ relationship with Rohl can tempt him to remain at the club.
