‘Tremendous player’: Jamie Redknapp says Arsenal have picked up an ‘absolute bargain’ signing

Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal have made an ‘absolute bargain’ signing under Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners have certainly backed Mikel Arteta in the transfer market over the past four and a half years and their belief in the Spaniard is starting to reap the rewards.

While Arteta is yet to deliver a Premier League title, Arsenal’s hopes of ending their 20-year wait received a boost yesterday.

Arsenal fans would be forgiven for fearing another late-season collapse following consecutive defeats to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich. But the north Londoners got back on track with a comfortable 2-0 win at Molineux on Saturday evening.

The win leaves Arsenal top of the pile heading into next week’s action, although Manchester City do have a game in hand over the Gunners.

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Martin Odegaard got the job done, with both efforts coming right at the end of each half.

And following yesterday’s crucial win, Jamie Redknapp was quick to praise one Arsenal star.

Redknapp says Arsenal have made ‘absolute bargain’ signing

It’s fair to say that Arsenal’s business in the transfer market has improved dramatically under sporting director Edu Gaspar.

While the Gunners haven’t been shy of spending big, with Declan Rice arriving for a British record fee last summer, the signing of Leandro Trossard stands out.

Of course, Arteta missed out on Mykhaylo Mudryk to Chelsea back in January last year and Arsenal quickly turned to the Belgian.

And after his latest effort for Arsenal, Redknapp suggested to Sky Sports that Arsenal have got the better deal.

“Great signing. They were in for Mudryk, they did not get him, obviously he chose to go to Chelsea and they paid big money for him and he was probably their second choice,” he said.

“But, if we look at the two careers up to now, and this is not to say that Mudryk can’t go and have a good career at Chelsea, but he has been a brilliant signing. He comes up with vital goals, he never complains, if he comes off the bench, he makes an impact, today that first goal was so vital, gives you width, he is comfortable on the ball. I think he has been a brilliant signing.

“When you’re looking to add players to the squad you have to make sure you bring in the right type and he’s certainly that. £27m is an absolute bargain for a tremendous player, technically good that can nick a goal.

“I know Odegaard got the second but that was a huge moment for their season.”

Trossard’s stats compared to Mudryk

Mudryk was widely viewed as Arsenal’s preferred target but the Ukrainian has struggled since his switch to west London.

Indeed, Mudryk has netted just six times and provided four assists in 52 appearances for the Blues.

Trossard has bagged 15 goals and registered 12 assists in 63 games for the Gunners.

Of course, Mudryk hasn’t exactly walked into an ideal situation at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue to underachieve.

But at this stage, it’s difficult to argue against the fact that Arsenal seem to have landed on the better signing after missing out on the Chelsea star.
