'Fair play...': Sky Sports pundits both in awe of 'fantastic' Sheffield Wednesday man vs Blackburn

Sheffield Wednesday earned another memorable win in the Championship on Sunday.

Danny Rohl now has 14 wins to his name as Sheffield Wednesday manager, with two of them having come against Blackburn Rovers.

The Owls have beaten Blackburn twice by 3-1 scorelines this season.

Goals from Josh Windass and then Marvin Johnson, with a very fortunate own goal courtesy of Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears handed Wednesday the win in Lancashire.

Sheffield Wednesday for the first time now are out of the relegation zone under Rohl, whose side have just two more games of the season remaining.

Sheffield Wednesday are now sitting in 21st place of the Championship table, just a point and a place above the drop zone.

Rotherham United remain in last place and have already been relegated to League One.

Huddersfield Town are in 23rd and on 44 points compared to Wednesday’s 47, then there’s Birmingham City in 22nd on 46 points.

Plymouth Argyle sit in 20th on 48 points, Blackburn Rovers in 19th on 49 points, and then QPR and Stoke City in 18th and 17th respectively, both on 50 points.

Johnson started in his familiar left wing-back position for Sheffield Wednesday against Blackburn Rovers.

And as always, he was up and down the left flank, creating openings for his teammates and getting his fourth goal of the season after 58 minutes of the game at Ewood Park.

After his initial exile under Xisco Munoz, Johnson has returned to the fold under Rohl, having now featured 27 times in the Championship this season, scoring and assisting four.

And on Sky Sports after the game, former Owls goalkeeper David Stockdale gave his verdict on Johnson, who ran the length of the pitch to get on the end of Anthony Musaba’s cross for the second goal.

Stockdale said:

“For me, this was the key. That challenge there [Will Vaulks in build-up to goal]. But if you look at the determination there from Marvin, he’s run the whole length of the pitch and he doesn’t even know if he’s going to get the ball.”

And Gareth Ainsworth then added:

“Fair play to Johnson, as Dave says. He’s determined, knows what he wants and it’s a fantastic finish.”

Danny Rohl knows best with Marvin Johnson

Johnson played a key role for Sheffield Wednesday last season.

He scored three goals and claimed seven assists in 44 League One appearances, so his exile under Munoz was both surprising and unnecessary.

Rohl quickly brought Johnson back into the picture and he’s not been let down; Johnson’s eight goal contortions makes him the second-most prolific player for Wednesday this season, behind Musaba on 11.

And there’s speculation online that Johnson is out of contract in the summer, although no official confirmation, and after being wanted by Ipswich Town in January, Wednesday will be keen to secure Johnson’s future.

Despite being 33 years old, he showed with his goal at Blackburn Rovers that he’s still got plenty of energy, with the finish being one of quality too.

Sheffield Wednesday take on West Brom at Hillsborough next weekend.
