'Give it your all': Bannan explained the 'amazing' thing that spurred Sheffield Wednesday on v Blackburn Rovers

Barry Bannan has explained what really spurred Sheffield Wednesday on as they beat Blackburn Rovers yesterday.

Sheffield Wednesday desperately needed a win this weekend after missing out on a huge opportunity against Stoke City last time out.

While they received a bit of luck at the hands of Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears, the Owls put on a solid performance to claim all three points and move out of the relegation zone for the first time under Danny Rohl.

Wednesday’s future is now completely in their hands and four points from the final two games could seal their position in the Championship next season.

The ‘amazing’ fans really made all the difference

The big win at Ewood Park was a great reward to the 7,321 supporters who made their way down to Lancashire over the weekend, and Barry Bannan has admitted that their ‘amazing’ fans contributed to their impressive performance.

Speaking on Sky Sports yesterday, the midfielder said: “It’s amazing. I’ve been here nine years now, so it doesn’t surprise me, but when you’ve got that behind you today, it’s hard not to go out and give it your all, because they’re spending their hard earned money on a Sunday afternoon when they could be watching it at home on TV. So that’s for them today as well as us.

“They’ve followed us through thick and thin and I’m just happy we can give something back to them.”

Can the supporters keep the Owls up?

Sheffield Wednesday’s return to Hillsborough this weekend is perfect timing really, with supporters likely to pack out the stands in their final home game of the campaign.

The atmosphere will be unbelievable after the win over Blackburn, and while West Brom are battling for their place in the play-offs, there is no doubt the crowd at Hillsborough will give the hosts a huge boost.

Similarly, the supporters travelling to Sunderland on the final day can also act as a twelfth man. The Black Cats have endured a poor season and don’t have anything to play for, so there is no doubt that Wednesday will be heard throughout the stadium.

There is absolutely no excuse for not staying up now, especially given that Huddersfield and Birmingham face really tough fixtures on the final day, with Ipswich and Norwich likely vying for the league title and play-off spots respectively.
