Newark and Sherwood District Council replace commercial bottle bank sites with community glass bins after kerbside scheme roll-out

Bottle banks are to be replaced with council-owned community glass bins after the roll-out of a kerbside collection.

Following the roll-out of Newark and Sherwood District Council’s new kerbside glass recycling scheme which provided many residents with personal glass recycling bins, a number of comercially-operated bottle banks have closed across the district.

Eight sites are to have replacement council-run community glass bins installed — with some already in place — to accommodate areas with higher demand for glass recycling and residents who opted out of having another bin at their property.

These will be in Newark, Southwell, Collingham, Fernwood and Lowdham.

The bins being council-run will also allow it to sell on the glass itself, as the previous comercial operator did, to cover some of the cost of the scheme.

Paul Peacock, leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “Prior to the rollout of our brand new kerbside glass recycling service, a commercial operator had bottle banks located at sites around our district and they would collect the glass and then sell it on.

“With the introduction of our new service many residents can now have their glass collected conveniently from the kerbside and, as a result, the commercial operator will no longer be providing bottle banks and is in the process of removing them from these sites.

“However, we always anticipated that in some parts of the district the offering of a bottle banks would need to be retained. This is due to various reasons such as some areas have a higher demand, whilst in other areas it may not be possible for residents to physically accommodate another bin and therefore they need access to community glass recycling bins.

“After assessing the situation for each area that previously had the commercial bottle banks, we will be installing new 1100 litre community bins at eight sites around the district. These sites are Collingham Health Centre, Fernwood Village Hall, London Road Car Park in Newark, Lowdham Village Hall, Newark Co-Op, Southwell Co-Op, Southwell Leisure Centre, and Waitrose in Newark. These new bins will be owned and operated by the council and we will add the glass collected from these banks into the glass we collect from the kerbside, which will allow us to sell on in our own right, thereby offsetting some of the costs of introducing the service.”

“So far we have replaced the bins at Collingham, London Road and Southwell Co-Op and, whilst we have not been informed when the removals of each commercial bin will be, we anticipate it will be over the next few weeks and we will look to install the new bins as soon as we are notified of the removal of the old bins.”

Kerbside glass recycling bins are being delivered to households who did not opt out of the scheme throughout April, expected to be complete within the next week, and will be collected on an eight-week cycle.

Households in Ollerton, Boughton, Walesby, Kirton, Edwinstowe, Eakring, Laxton, Egmanton, Bilsthorpe, Wellow and Rufford continue to be served by Recycling Ollerton and Boughton.
