‘Great shout’: Jeff Stelling thinks Man United should look at hiring Champions League-winning manager now

Jeff Stelling believes a manager who has won the Champions League would be a ‘great shout’ for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag’s future is hanging in the balance following an underwhelming season at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has guided Manchester United to successive FA Cup finals following an unconvincing penalty shootout win over Coventry City on Sunday.

But the manner of the victory has raised plenty of doubts over Ten Hag’s future after a stunning second-half collapse at Wembley.

Indeed, Alan Shearer believes the former Ajax boss will be heading out the door this summer, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe already making big changes behind the scenes.

The Sun claimed just last night that Ten Hag’s departure is looking ‘increasingly likely’ even if the Red Devils pull off a surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City next month.

United have already been linked with plenty of names ahead of the summer and Jeff Stelling has suggested they should move for a manager with experience at a ‘massive’ club.

Stelling suggests Zinedine Zidane for Man United

Speaking on talkSPORT, Stelling reacted to reports claiming that Ten Hag is set to leave Old Trafford.

The presenter was informed of some of the favourites to succeed the Dutchman, which included Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate, Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel and Zinedine Zidane.

“Look, it’s a massive club so I think he [Zidane] would be a great shout,” Stelling said. “I don’t necessarily see it happening. I think Xavi is another one at the moment, leaving Barcelona.

“But again, no management experience in this country. That’s not always necessary but when you mention the names at the top, Manchester United might think things are bad now but they’ll be having nightmares at the prospect of one or two of them.

“Not me, I’m not casting aspersions on Gareth Southgate or Graham Potter but I just don’t think United fans would welcome them.”

“I think Zidane would excite more than any of the names you mentioned there but I’m with Jeff, I’m not sure I can see it happening,” Ally McCoist agreed.

“He’s done it at a big club, massively. Great success at a massive club.”

Zidane keen on Man United job

Should Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS decide Ten Hag isn’t the man to take United forward, Zidane is an option which would excite supporters.

The Frenchman delivered three Champions League titles during his first spell as Real Madrid boss.

He scooped two La Liga titles during his tenures at Santiago Bernabeu and as has been mentioned, he has experience managing a huge football club.

With plenty of names being thrown into the mix to replace Ten Hag, Zidane is also reportedly keen on a switch to Old Trafford.
