James Maddison at serious risk of losing record after first season at Spurs

Since signing for Spurs in the summer, it has been a mixed bag for Maddison who enjoyed a stunning start to the campaign.

His displays under Postecoglou were so impressive that he was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award for August.

However, an injury to his ankle in November saw him miss a significant chunk of game time and he has struggled to find his form since returning in January.

This has even led to BBC Sport’s Garth Crooks saying Maddison does not even look like he cares at the moment.

But there may be an important record still to play for over the coming six games with Maddison having scored at least one direct free kick in each of his last nine seasons.

Here is a roundup of each free kick scored by the Spurs midfielder.

Statistics via Transfermarkt.

Now, the out of form midfielder will be eyeing up a goal from a set piece in the remaining games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Burnley, Manchester City and Sheffield United.

Harry Kane typically breaks his free kick drought with Bayern Munich

As Spurs continue to struggle to score from a direct free-kick, in typical fashion, Harry Kane broke his drought on the weekend for Bayern Munich.

In a season where Spurs finally brought in a free-kick specialist, Kane has managed to end his long drought without a goal from a free kick after leaving Spurs.

Maddison is perhaps the first competent free-kick taker Spurs have had since Christian Eriksen left the club.

However, even he is struggling to find the back of the net from a free kick with Spurs having some issues with winning fouls in and around the box.

The Lilywhites remain one of just two clubs to have only been awarded one penalty this season and they haven’t had much joy just outside of the area either this season.
