Sheffield Wednesday's worst-rated players of the last 10 years and what they're up to now, including Izzy Brown

Despite the struggles of this season, it could yet prove to be a very memorable one for Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit in 21st place of the Championship table

It’s the first time under Danny Rohl that the Owls have sat above the dotted line, and it comes just in time too, with only two games left of the season.

There’s still a mountain to climb but if Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday beat the drop, this season will go down as a surprisingly successful one.

This season has seen some star performers emerge, and some not so, and here we look at Sheffield Wednesday’s lowest-rated players form the last 10 seasons, and what they’re up to now…

Note: These players must have made 10 or more appearances in a single season, with their rating coming from WhoScored.

Izzy Brown

Izzy Brown is a player who could well have made it to the top.

But injuries forced Brown to announce an early retirement last year at the age of just 26, following a career that had seen him play for the likes of Chelsea among a number of other loan clubs.

His time at Sheffield Wednesday though is best forgotten, and best remembered for one of the worst corners we’ve ever seen.

He had an average rating of 6.34 at Sheffield Wednesday, and it’s not known what he’s up to right now.

Liam Shaw

Coming through the ranks at Hillsborough, Liam Shaw was meant to be the next best midfielder in the English Football League.

He signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic in 2021 and joined up with the Scottish giants for the 2022/23 campaign, having since made one league appearance.

He’s now on loan at Wigan Athletic where he’s not scored or assisted in 20 league appearances.

During the 2020/21 relegation season, Shaw boasted an average rating of 6.34.

Alessio da Cruz

Dutch-born Alessio da Cruz spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Parma during the 2019/20 season.

In 15 total appearances, the attacker failed to score and failed to make an impression, with an average rating of 6.33.

Now, da Cruz plays for Dutch top flight side Fortuna Sittard.

Jacob Butterfield

Jacob Butterfield spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Derby County in the 2017/18 season.

But the former Barnsley man wouldn’t leave a lasting legacy in S6, featuring 23 times in all competitions before returning to Derby.

He had an average rating of 6.26 in his one season at Wednesday, which seemingly set him up for a downward spiral; he now plays for Scunthorpe United in the National League North.

Will Buckley

Will Buckley was once a prolific midfielder for Brighton during their time in the Championship.

Though his time at Sheffield Wednesday was less prolific, with Buckley joining on loan from Sunderland in the 2016/17 season and eventually boasting an average raring of 6.23.

A shoulder injury hampered his time in S6, and after calling an early retirement in 2020, he then set up his own sports agency.

Sam Winnall

Sam Winnall is another who could’ve gone further, but failed to live up to expectations.

He joined from rivals Barnsley in January 2017 after a prolific year-and-a-half there, and he showed a lot of promise in his first half-season in S6, scoring three in 14 league appearances.

But he couldn’t make it stick.

A combination of injuries and loans meant that he was released at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, in which he had a rating of 6.22.

He’s since retired.

Jeremy Helan

A one-time Manchester City prospect, Jeremy Helan actually racked up 145 appearances for the Owls.

But 2015/16 Helan was one of the worst we’ve seen at Sheffield Wednesday, in a season that led to his release and his eventual retirement; he was rated 6.2 that season.

After leaving the Owls, Helan never made a return to football, instead turning his focus to religion.

Joe Wildsmith

Goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith is the first of three from the 2020/21 relegation season finishing this list.

He and Keiren Westwood shared the no.1 spot that season, though Wildsmith’s 2020/21 season with Sheffield Wednesday is best forgotten; he was rated just 6.16.

But the 28-year-old has since rediscovered himself with Derby County, currently tied for the League One Golden Glove award.

Andre Green

Andre Green joined in January 2021 on an 18-month contract, brought in to help the Owls beat the drop.

He was a well-regarded youngster at Aston Villa but couldn’t make it stick during loan spells, though there was hope that he’d prevail in S6.

That wasn’t the case though with Green boasting a rating of 6.15 for his performances in that 2020/21 season.

He now plays for Rotherham United, though injury has limited him to just nine Championship appearances and 0 goal contributions this season.

Jack Marriott

The worst-rated Sheffield Wednesday player of the past 10 seasons, and by quite some way, is striker Jack Marriot at 6.02.

He was another who came in on loan from Derby County but in 12 Championship appearances, he failed to fire Wednesday to Championship survival in 2020/21.

After his time at Hillsborough, Marriott proved prolific for both Peterborough United and Fleetwood Town, and now plays for Wrexham.
