‘Technically good’: Jermain Defoe says 25-year-old Arsenal man could play in Martin Odegaard’s position

Arsenal have a number of players in their squad who are incredibly versatile.

Indeed, the likes of Jakub Kiwior, Ben White, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have all showcased their abilities to play in different positions.

Mikel Arteta hasn’t been afraid to experiment with some of his players in recent times, and speaking on Premier League Productions, Jermain Defoe has suggested that Arsenal have another player who could change role.

Indeed, according to Defoe, Declan Rice is technically good enough to play as a number 10.

Jermain Defoe says Declan Rice could play as a number 10

Defoe spoke about Rice’s ability, claiming that he could easily play further forwards.

“Everything, his all-round game, I’ve said it a number of times, he could play as a six, he could play in a double pivot, he could play as an eight or a 10, he gets you up the pitch, he’s technically good,” Defoe said.

Declan Rice could be a number 10

We’ve never really thought about the idea of playing Rice as a number 10, but, it could work well.

Rice certainly has the touch to play as an attacking midfielder, and while his eye for a pass isn’t quite there, he could work well as a wrecking ball of an attacking midfielder bursting through the backline and making late runs into the box.

Of course, with Martin Odegaard playing so brilliantly, it’s hard to imagine that Mikel Arteta would ever be tempted to play Rice in this way, but perhaps it’s something to keep in mind if Arsenal ever find themselves chasing a game and wanting something a bit different.

Rice could well play as an advanced playmaker for the Gunners.
