Cambridge City look to use Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup victory momentum for final league fixture at Lye Town

Having picked up some silverware on Tuesday evening, Cambridge City will now switch their focus to rubber stamping their Step 4 status at the weekend.

There was celebrations at the Demcom Stadium in Ely for those of a Lilywhites persuasion after Wisbech Town were defeated 4-0 in the final of the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup.

Striker Stan Leech stole the headlines with a hat-trick for City alongside Dylan Edge’s effort from close range.

The victory means that City have now lifted the trophy on a record-extending 16 occasions – six more times than any other side in the competition’s long history.

And manager Robbie Nightingale will be hoping that his side will take the momentum from that triumph into tomorrow’s season-ending clash at Lye Town.

With AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Rugby Town both three points adrift, City head to the west Midlands knowing that either a victory or a draw will be good enough to avoid dropping into the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands Division’s relegation zone.

And even if City were to lose, not only must Rushden & Diamonds and Rugby win their fixtures to leapfrog, they will also need to overturn goal difference swings of eight and six respectively.
