Eddie Howe now says £15m Newcastle United player will not play again this season

Newcastle United may have suffered yet another season-ending injury.

The injury problems refuse to go away for Newcastle United, who have been plagued by fitness concerns for the majority of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Magpies recently lost Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles to ACL injuries, which means they could be out for the rest of 2024.

Since then, Eddie Howe has stated that Joe Willock and Lewis Miley will not play any more this season. The former has an Achilles issue, while the latter has a problem with his back. It has been decided that both midfielders will spend the rest of the season on the sidelines, in the hope that they are fully fit in time for pre-season.

It has been a gruelling campaign for Newcastle United, and it looks like that will continue to be the case.

Eddie Howe loses another player to injury for the rest of the season

That is because Howe has been speaking to the media ahead of the Magpies’ Premier League clash with Sheffield United, and he provided some more disappointing injury news.

The Toon boss has shared an update on Matt Targett, and it is not good.

According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Howe has admitted that the left-back is ‘unlikely’ to play again this season.

Terrible campaign for Newcastle United defender Matt Targett

It feels like Matt Targett has had absolutely no luck since joining the Magpies permanently for £15million. He was immense during his loan spell, but since then it has been a nightmare.

Last season he was either injured or on the bench after losing his place to Dan Burn, while the 23/24 campaign has been plagued with injuries. In total, he has made just seven appearances this season.

He suffered a hamstring injury when he was being trialled as a centre-midfielder back in November, and that cost him months of his career.

The 28-year-old was able to return to fitness, and was on the bench for recent defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City.

But now he has picked up an Achilles problem, and was recently spotted wearing a protective boot.

It comes at a time when he is fighting for his future, with Targett one player who Newcastle United could sell this summer. Given what has happened over the past two years, perhaps both parties could benefit from parting ways…
