'One of my closest friends': Aston Villa player says he's so proud of £45m Chelsea man after draw last night

Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last night was a real battle as Mauricio Pochettino’s men came back from 2-0 down.

However, there does not look to be any bad blood between at least two players from the respective teams.

Villa looked like they were heading for all three points at one stage after going 2-0 up.

Chelsea fought back, though, with goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher earning the Blues a draw.

And had it not been for quite a controversial VAR call, Pochettino’s men would have won the game, with Benoit Badiashile scoring a disallowed goal in stoppage time.

Aston Villa player proud of Chelsea star

Morgan Rogers, who put Villa 2-0 up, would have been frustrated to see his side throw away their healthy lead.

However, that did not stop the 21-year-old from praising one of his opponents on the night, Cole Palmer.

Palmer was unable to score against Villa, but he has been excellent in the Premier League this season, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists.

Speaking about the England international after the game, Rogers said to BBC Sport: “He’s one of my closest friends in life. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s showing everyone what I knew he could do two or three years ago.”

Cole Palmer versus Aston Villa

It was not Palmer’s best performance in a Chelsea shirt. Particularly in the first half, Villa were really able to shut the England international down.

Overall, though, Palmer has obviously been fantastic this term. In total, he has scored 23 goals and set up another 13.

Chelsea have another tough game on Thursday when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, so Pochettino will need Palmer at his best.

The Blues cannot really survive without the former Manchester City man, who cost his current club £45m, showing that against Arsenal. If they are going to beat their London rivals and keep their hopes of qualifying for Europe alive, then they are going to need him.
