Danny Haynes shines with the bat as Wisbech Town record first win of the season

After the disappointment of last week’s opening day defeat in the cold at Harecroft Road, Wisbech Town won on the road on Saturday.

James Williams’ men recorded a comfortable four-wicket win at Blunham, with Ryan Clark, George Gowler and Danny Haynes the stars of the show.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field, which looked a good call when opener Shabz Hussain was out for just one, caught by Jamie Seabrook off the bowling of Kieran Haynes.

Danny Haynes hit an unbeaten 72 to steer Wisbech to victory

The home team took the score to 27 before George Gowler clean bowled other opener Kanchana Rodrigo for nine, and then Gowler dismissed wicket keeper and captain Connor Heaps for a golden duck with the very next ball.

Tobias Van Den Heever and Jacques Wildon dug in to progress the score, but when Clark had Van Heever caught by Seabrook for 41, Blunham were 69-4 and never really recovered.

Wildon followed soon after, clean bowled by Gowler for 18, and Grist was also clean bowled, by Clark for five, before Josh Porter bowled Daniel Clark for seven and Ryan Clark caught Max Hurst LBW for two, leaving the score at 94-8.

Ryan Clark took 3-21 from nine overs

The tail wagged a bit, but Williams caught Joe McGilley for six off the bowling of Joe Dunning and Kieran Haynes clean bowled Matt Cottrell for 13 to leave the final score 138 all out from 37.5 overs.

Clark ended up with impressive figures of 3-21 from nine overs, Gowler 3-26 from 10, Haynes 2-44 from 5.5, Dunning 1-18 off six and Porter 1-19 off six.

In reply, Wisbech made a solid start with captain Williams and Danny Haynes putting on 41 for the opening wicket before Williams was caught after scoring 9.

Wicket keeper Josh Bowers came in and scored 19, taking the score to 82-2 before he was also caught. Clark scored just seven before being run out and Seabrook was bowled second ball for a duck, leaving the score at 91-4.

George Gowler took 3-26 from ten for Wisbech

But with Haynes hitting eight fours in an unbeaten 72 from 90 balls, the win would come. Jonny Garner scored nine to take the total to 113-5 before he was clean bowled, and Thomas Hoyle’s was the last wicket to go, caught in the field for three.

Gowler’s undefeated two from 14 balls supported Haynes to hunt down the victory with 17.2 overs remaining.

Next Saturday, Wisbech entertain Histon, who have also lost one and won one of their opening two games.
