Outwell Swifts and Wisbech St Mary A both close in on titles, but defeat for Leverington Sports

Leverington’s chances of winning the Peterborough League Premier Division suffered a huge blow on Saturday when they were heavily beaten 6-2 at mid-table Sawtry.

A 4-3 win at Whittlesey Athletic Reserves on Wednesday evening had kept fifth-place Sports right in the mix with a fifth consecutive victory, Louie Garner netting twice and Jake Gadsden and sub Joe Reed also on target.

They are now four points off the pace with four games remaining, with a huge game at home to perennial champs Moulton Harrox on Tuesday evening. Just four points separate the top five teams.

Tydd are still in the relegation area after suffering the bitter disappointment of a 1-0 home defeat to bottom side Netherton United, four days after drawing 4-4 at home to Holbeach United Reserves Bradley Easey and sub Charlie Minchella both netting twice.

Tydd can still get out of it, however, with five points separating the bottom six. They entertain sixth-place Crowland Town on Tuesday and title-chasing Stanground Sports on Saturday.

In Division One, Chatteris Town have moved into the promotion places with just two games remaining, although third-place Cardea are just two points behind them with three games in hand.

On Saturday, The Lilies won 4-0 at struggling Wittering Premiair Reserves, Sam Bond netting twice to make it 29 for the season and Dylan James and Martin Saunders with his 18th also on target. Josh Dobson was named man of the match.

On Tuesday evening, Chatteris drew 1-1 at fourth-place FC Peterborough Reserves, Bond coming off the bench to score. They have what looks like a sure three-pointer at Wisbech Town Reserves next Saturday, before a game at Holbeach United Sports on May 11.

Bottom side Wisbech Town Reserves lost 6-0 at home to Park Farm Pumas on Saturday.

In Division Two, Leverington Sports Reserves lost 2-1 at Stamford Belvedere Reserves, four days after a 5-0 home drubbing to Whaplode Drove Rovers. On Wednesday night, Tydd Reserves beat Sutton Bridge United 4-2, Mark Garner netting twice for Bridge to take him to 11 for the campaign.

Leverington Sports lost 2-1 at home to South Lincolnshire Swifts in Division Four, Gary Green scoring.

Wisbech St Mary are fourth from bottom of the Cambs County League Premier Division with one game remaining after a disappointing season, their latest defeat a closely-fought 1-0 reverse at new champions Great Shelford on Saturday.

Wimblington beat Over Sports Reserves 2-0 in Senior B, with Nick Ward getting both goals. One win from their final two games, at home to Fordham on Tuesday and away at bottom side Swavesey Institute on Saturday, will guarantee promotion.

March Town Reserves, who must win their remaining two games and hope Wimblington slip up badly, lost in the final of the Percy Oldham Memorial Cup on Friday night, 3-0 to LInton Granta at Newmarket Town’s ground.

The Hares started the final strongly and won a penalty after ten minutes when Liam Monaghan was brought down, but Josh Bryant’s spot kick was saved. Bryant then had a header cleared off the line before Linton scored on the break to lead at half time.

A Jordan Smith own goal made it two to Linton early in the second half and things got worse for The Hares when Smith was sent off for a second yellow card.

A third goal followed for Linton before March suffered a second sending-off after a straight red for Blake Cowley.

Disappointed manager Kieran Daplyn said: “Im going to be really honest. We gifted the opposition three goals, all from six yards out. We are the youngest side in the league and looked inexperienced against a side that dropped two leagues from the Premier Division this season.

“Experience proved key. We lack that massively, but to put your worst performance in at a cup final is unacceptable no matter what age you are.

“The standards we set are high and this was one of the worst performances I’ve seen under my management. It hurts.”

In 1B, Chatteris Town Reserves beat Exning United 1-0, a Charlie Munns spot kick in the first half doing the damage, with Ben Kimberley named man of the match. In the same division, bottom of the table March Town A lost 8-0 at Witchford 96 Reserves and Benwick Athletic (Christchurch) went down 4-1 at Needingworth United.

A third title on the bounce now looks inevitable for Outwell Swifts after a 4-0 win at Manea United clinched promotion from 2B, man of the match Ben Garner notching a hat-trick and Stefan Anderson also on target.

On Thursday evening, Swifts went top of the table for the first time with a 6-0 home win over Crusaders 2019, Adan-Jay Lewis hitting two to make it 20 for the season, Garner coming off the bench for a brace and Ethan Goodale and Brandon Hedge with his 32nd of the season also on target. Lee Punter was man of the match.

Swifts could clinch the title on Wednesday at home to Littleport Town if second-place Huntingdon United Reserves fail to beat Manea. If Huntingdon do get the three points they then travel to Outwell for a huge game next Saturday, although even if the away side were to win, Swifts could still take the title by winning at home to Manea on May 7.

Wisbech St Mary Reserves stretched their run without a win to ten games as they lost 5-2 at home to Huntingdon United Reserves, Aidan McMurray and Ryan McManus on target.

Another side closing in on a title are Wisbech St Mary A, whose 3-0 win at Mepal and Sutton Reserve came four days after a 3-1 home win over fellow challengers Alconbury Weston, Jaden Carter, Thomas Chilton and Josh Williams scoring and Carter also seeing red.

Saints need just a point for promotion and to seal the title, with their final two games at home to Mepal and Sutton Reserves on Tuesday and at home to Willingham Wolves on Saturday.

Chatteris Town A drew 0-0 at home to March Academy, bottom side Outwell Swifts Reserves lost 3-1 at home to Stretham Reserves, Callum Willoughby scoring, and Wisbech Town Acorns beat Pymoor 2-1, Lee Chapman and Ben Flowers scoring.

On Wednesday evening, March Academy beat Outwell Swifts Reserves 5-0, Jack Conyard scoring twice, and Maison Smithers, sub Michael Croucher and an own goal doing the damage. The previous evening, Chatteris Town A drew 0-0 at Hartford Rangers Reserves and Manea United Reserves lost 4-3 at home to Pymoor, Daniel Allen, Darren Cave and Jack Rolfe netting for United.

In Division Two of the North West Norfolk League, Marshland Saints Reserves finished their season with a 3-3 home draw against Weeting Saxon, Charlie Dungey scoring twice and Steven Cooke also on target.
