One-time Sheffield Wednesday coach sacked from first manager job after just six months in charge

A former Sheffield Wednesday coach has been sacked from his first managerial job, after just six months in charge.

Sheffield Wednesday have a long and varied list of former managers.

Right now though, Danny Rohl is the man in charge, and he’s without doubt the best Sheffield Wednesday manager since Carlos Carvalhal.

And in terms of achievements, if Rohl keeps the Owls in the Championship this season, that might trump Carvalhal taking Wednesday to the play-off final.

Wednesday were down and out when Rohl arrived, but he’s since put 50 points on the board and has the Owls just one more point away from survival.

A couple of former Sheffield Wednesday managers have returned to action this season.

Darren Moore jumped back in with Huddersfield Town following his surprise Hillsborough exit last summer.

He lasted just 23 games there and has since taken charge of Port Vale, who have now been relegated to League Two following a dismal season.

Elsewhere at the foot of the League One table, Garry Monk returned to the dugout with Cambridge United after a four-year hiatus.

His side eventually finished in 18th, four points above the drop zone.

Rohl’s predecessor Xisco Munoz is now managing in Slovakia.

Steve Bruce was Sheffield Wednesday manager for just 18 games during 2019.

He won seven of those and was relatively successful during his time at Hillsborough, and he brought with him his staff from spells at Sunderland, Hull City, and Aston Villa.

Former Spurs and Birmingham City defender Stephen Clemence was one of those staff members.

Clemence alongside Steve Agnew acted as first-team coaches upon Bruce’s appointment, with Bruce arriving later on.

But Clemence and the rest of Bruce’s staff would follow him to Newcastle United later in 2019.

In November last year though, Clemence took charge of Gillingham.

Gillingham sacked Neil Harris with the club in 8th place of the League Two table in November.

Then, Bruce’s long-time no.2 Clemence took charge, eventually steering the club towards a 12th place finish, only to then be sacked on Monday this week.

In total, Clemence oversaw 34 games, winning 12 and losing 13.

It’s proved to be a tough inaugural job for the 46-year-old Clemence, though credit must be given for taking on what was a tricky job with high expectations.

What the next step for him is remains to be seen.

Meanwhile in S6, Sheffield Wednesday travel to Sunderland for their penultimate game of the season this weekend.
