'A smart move': Dom Howson urges Sheffield Wednesday to sign 'fine' 19-year-old this summer

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged to sign a 19-year-old gem this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are only days away from discovering whether they will be playing in the Championship next season.

This weekend’s results will have a huge impact on the Owls’ transfer plans, with a long list of players also out of contract.

Wednesday could potentially see the likes of Josh Windass, Barry Bannan and Di’Shon Bernard leave the club, though staying up might mean they are more likely to put pen to paper on new deals.

Meanwhile, Wednesday will part ways with their eight loan stars, with Momo Diaby the only player who has the option to buy inserted into his move to Hillsborough.

There has already been talks around trying to bring both Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo back to the club if they stay in the Championship, but they have now been encouraged to try and sign another of their star loanees.

James Beadle joined Wednesday on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January and has since been ‘immense‘, picking up seven clean sheets in 18 appearances – the third highest percentage of any goalkeeper to have played more than two games in the Championship this term (38.9%).

James Beadle could return to Sheffield Wednesday

The England U20 international is highly-rated at Brighton and is unlikely to leave permanently, but journalist Dom Howson believes it would be a very ‘smart move’ to bring him back to Hillsborough.

He wrote on X: “James Beadle’s record since joining #SWFC in January: 18 starts 26 goals conceded 7 clean sheets.

“A fine shot-stopper. Has to improve his distribution but should get better there with experience. Would be a smart move to bring him back to S6 next season.”

But would Brighton let him go?

Brighton haven’t really had a first-choice goalkeeper this season, with Bart Verbruggen and Jason Steele appearing to split the role between them.

However, with Steele approaching his 34th birthday, the Seagulls could do a lot worse than promoting Beadle to their own first team as back-up.

Brighton do also have Kjell Scherpen and Carl Rushworth out on loan though, so they could certainly afford to let the 19-year-old leave on loan again.

They will surely want him to pick up regular game-time so he can develop as a player, and returning to Sheffield Wednesday where he has already enjoyed great success seems like the perfect idea.

It will surely depend on whether the Owls can stay up though, because his form in Yorkshire will undoubtedly have attracted the attention of a number of other Championship clubs.
