Boyhood fan & 'superb' outcast: 5 Sheffield Wednesday players who could leave even if they stay up - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday are on the verge of discovering their fate in the Championship relegation battle.

Sheffield Wednesday will travel to Sunderland this weekend as they look to extend their unbeaten run to six games.

If they can do so, then their place in the Championship for next season will be confirmed.

It was only a few weeks ago that the Owls looked destined for League One, but back-to-back victories over Blackburn Rovers and West Brom has left them three points above the relegation zone.

Danny Rohl will be rightfully praised if he can keep the club in the second division, but his main focus will be attending to his team for the next campaign.

Over ten players are set to see their contracts expire this summer, while many other players’ future may have depended on whether they stayed up.

While they will be desperate to tie down a number of their biggest stars if they stay in the Championship, others may have only been kept hold of if they were in League One.

Here are five players we can expect to leave if Sheffield Wednesday avoid relegation…

Lee Gregory

Lee Gregory is extremely likely to leave Sheffield Wednesday no matter what league they are in, having played only one minute of senior football since October.

The striker was heavily linked with a move away in January, but the Owls oddly opted to keep him.

With Gregory’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if he drops down to League One anyway.

Cameron Dawson

Cameron Dawson spent the first half of the campaign as Wednesday’s first-choice goalkeeper before James Beadle arrived.

Even with the 19-year-old’s loan spell ending this weekend, Dawson has been tipped to leave his boyhood club after 14 years.

The Owls may be eager to bring Beadle back, while they will have to also look for another replacement for Dawson.

Reece James

Reece James played an important role in Wednesday’s promotion to the Championship before signing a permanent deal with the club.

However, the full-back has made only eight appearances this season and has only played eight minutes in over five months.

It’s unclear how long his contract is, but I think we can expect him to leave no matter what this season’s outcome is.

Mallik Wilks

Sheffield Wednesday paid cold hard cash for Mallik Wilks’ signature, and there is no doubt they will regret that now.

The striker has scored three goals in 42 games for the Owls, none of which have come in the Championship.

Wilks clearly isn’t good enough to play in the second tier and should be offloaded this summer, while Wednesday need to invest heavily in their frontline.

Momo Diaby

Momo Diaby has an option-to-buy clause in his loan contract, but it would be surprising if Wednesday exercised it.

The Frenchman missed out on the first half of the campaign due to injury and has since struggled to earn himself a regular place in the team, making only two starts.

Diaby wasn’t Danny Rohl’s signing and I would expect to see him bring in his own midfield targets and allow the 27-year-old to return to Portimonense.
