Sheffield Wednesday may have an unlikely chance at signing a very well-liked striker in the summer.
Sheffield Wednesday still need to get over the line in the Championship this season.
But for the first time all season, the odds are very much on their side.
Birmingham City need to beat Norwich City in order to stand a chance of Championship survival.
If they do, and Wednesday lose against Sunderland, then the Owls will be relegated on goal difference.
But if Sheffield Wednesday take a point from their game at the Stadium of Light on Saturday then they’ll stay in the Championship regardless of what Birmingham City’s result is.
So thoughts are steadily turning to the summer and what might be in store for the Owls and manager Danny Rohl.
And owner Dejphon Chansiri will surely have an eye on what changes he can make at the club, with a big summer transfer window needed.
Though Sheffield Wednesday, in a few week’s time, may have an opening to sign Ike Ugbo.
Ike Ugbo parent club Troyes facing relegation from Ligue 2
Ugbo has spent this season on loan from French club Troyes.
He spent the first half of the campaign with Cardiff City where he scored four in 20 Championship outings, then joining Sheffield Wednesday in January and going on to score seven in 17.
Ugbo has clearly impressed at Hillsborough; even when he’s not scoring, he puts in the work rate and gives his all for the team.
Rohl was recently quizzed by The Star on whether or not he’d try to sign Ugbo permanently in the summer, though Rohl deflected the question, with Sunderland the only thing on his mind right now.
But over in France, Troyes are facing relegation themselevs.
Though unlike Sheffield Wednesday, they’re in the bottom three right now; they’ve won just one of their last 10 and now find themselves in 17th (the first of three relegation spots in Ligue 2), with just three games of the season left.
Troyes play Annecy in their final league game of the season on May 17th.
The major obstacle in possible Ike Ugbo transfer
Ugbo has certainly given Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday reason to bring him back this summer.
And with Troyes now facing relegation from the French second tier, it seems highly likely that Ugbo would want to move on to bigger and better after his impressive season in the Championship.
But with Ugbo under contract at Troyes until 2026, the French outfit are under no real pressure to sell this summer, and so he won’t be cheap at all.
The only pressure may be cashing in on Ugbo whilst his stock is high, which it certainly will be; especially so if Troyes are relegated as the vultures will no doubt swoop in and try and poach him.
Expect other teams to want to take a punt on Ugbo, with other Championship clubs bound to be looking at him ahead of the summer following his impressive streak for Wednesday.
Ugbo won’t command a huge transfer fee if Troyes are relegated and with Sheffield Wednesday set to streamline their wage bill this summer, there could be room in the budget for a move for Ugbo.
The Owls will have to hope that first; Troyes are relegated, and second; that they have the first say on the 25-year-old’s future.
