Paul Merson picks the winner of Liverpool vs Tottenham, he’s predicted a six-goal thriller

Tottenham travel to Liverpool this weekend in search of a much-needed three points towards their Champions League qualification goals.

Spurs are off the back of three defeats on the spin, losing 4-0 to Newcastle, 3-2 to Arsenal in the North London derby and 2-0 to Chelsea in another London rivalry.

The Lilywhites have struggled with their performance levels as they limp towards the finishing line, with aims of Champions League qualification slowly drifting away.

Seven points separate them from rivals Aston Villa, who sit in fourth, with only one game in hand offering a chance to close the gap.

Several issues need addressing by Ange Postecoglou, from the team’s intensity to ball progression, while defensive set-pieces appear to be a reoccurring problem for the Spurs manager.

The clash with Liverpool offers a tough task to bounce back in to avoid a fourth successive defeat, though the Reds aren’t finding it easy either.

Premier League title hopes are hanging by a thread after a run of form that includes just one win in five for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction

With an enticing match up between Liverpool and Tottenham this weekend, plenty of supporters are expecting to tune into a goal-fest.

The same can be said of former-footballer-turned-pundit Paul Merson, who is anticipating a six-goal thriller at Anfield as part of his predictions for the week.

Writing for Sportskeeda, the ex-Arsenal man said: “Jurgen Klopp only has two more home games and his players will want to put on a show to give him the send off he deserves.

“Tottenham always have a go and score a lot of goals, so this game could be incredibly entertaining.”

Paul Merson’s prediction: Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham.

Liverpool vs Tottenham head-to-head record

The match between Liverpool and Tottenham this weekend is set to be the 183rd meeting between the two teams on record.

Klopp’s team have history on their side, winning almost double as many clashes as Spurs in the past.

The German manager’s first clash in charge of the Reds was, in fact, a 0-0 draw against Tottenham in October 2015.

His record since has been nothing more than a nuisance for the Lilywhites, who have only managed to overcome Liverpool twice in Klopp’s almost ten-years at the helm.

Fortunately for Spurs, the latest victory was in the reverse fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this season, which may bring some hope of completing the double over their opponents.
