Woman tried to cash phony HCCC student refund checks, Jersey City police say

Jersey City police are investigating multiple instances of fraud after a woman attempted to deposit at least three forged Hudson County Community College student refund checks, authorities said.

The incidents occurred April 26, April 30 and May 1, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. College officials told police the same 24-year-old woman tried to deposit the phony checks through a banking app.

Hudson County Community College “is aware of the issue and reported the incidents to the Jersey City Police Department,” the college said in a statement, “HCCC is cooperating with the JCPD investigation.”

One of the students’ refund check was in the amount of $2,188, police said in radio transmissions when the fraud was reported.
