'Those players do not deserve that': Carragher stunned by what Man United fans did at full-time vs Palace

Jamie Carragher was left stunned by what the Manchester United fans did at full-time after Erik ten Hag’s side were thrashed by Crystal Palace on Monday.

In a turbulent season, United’s trip to Selhurst Park may have surely marked the lowest point yet, as Palace ran out 4-0 winners, with Michael Olise, in particular, tearing the visitors apart.

With Manchester United dealing with a number of injuries right now, their fans may have already been incredibly pessimistic about facing a side which has been so impressive under Oliver Glasner.

And those fears were more than justified. United were calamitous at the back, with Casemiro enduring a complete nightmare against the Eagles.

Manchester United’s supporters in attendance had every reason to vent their frustration at the performance that they had seen after the full-time whistle, particularly given that they travelled for a Monday night game. However, their reaction may have caught many by surprise.

Many in the away end at Selhurst Park were applauding the team as they came over. And speaking on Monday Night Football (broadcast on 6/5; 21:58), Jamie Carragher suggested that he was blown away by how the fans responded to the loss.

“That’s unbelievable, isn’t it,” he said.

“Listen, most teams’ away support is fantastic, they go on the road, they pay their money, that is absolutely fantastic from Manchester United fans. Do you know what, those players do not deserve that.

“Look at that, that is unbelievable support.”

Supporters had every right to voice their anger at Selhurst Park

The fans’ patience has definitely been tested throughout the campaign, with United not winning a league game against a team outside the bottom six since mid-February.

Just about everything seemed to go wrong against Palace on Monday night, and the scoreline could have easily been even more emphatic.

So it is surprising that the supporters were able to clap their players off at the end. As Carragher suggests, it is definitely a lot more than many of those players actually deserve.
