Exclusive: Tottenham have big advantage over Newcastle United in race to sign Conor Gallagher this summer

Tottenham Hotspur hold a major advantage over Newcastle United in the race for Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher this summer.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side find themselves struggling to pick up results in the Premier League as their season fizzles out.

Europa League football will now be the goal for Tottenham with three games remaining in their campaign with Aston Villa now almost over the line in fourth.

Regardless of what Spurs achieve this summer, Daniel Levy and Postecoglou will be looking to improve this squad with a number of changes.

The Australian manager has already admitted as much during a recent press conference where he spoke openly on the expectation for players to move on.

“I’ve got to change this squad, I have to. Because I’ve got to build a squad I think can play our football. For that to happen, there has to be exits,” he said.

One player who Tottenham are looking to bring in this summer is Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher with the England international stuck in a contract debacle.

And HITC Football‘s transfer expert Graeme Bailey has been speaking exclusively to The Spurs News about the midfielder’s future.

Chelsea are still yet to even offer Gallagher an improved deal as he looks set to go into the summer with just one-year remaining on his current deal.

This has naturally put a number of clubs on red alert ahead of the summer window with Chelsea now potentially set to cash in on their homegrown star.

Newcastle United and West Ham are both believed to be in the picture for the 24-year-old with Tottenham one of the bigger proposed landing spots.

And Bailey has now revealed Spurs already hold an advantage over the Magpies in the race for the Chelsea midfielder.

“I understand that he’s not that keen to move to Newcastle, from what I’m being told,” said Bailey.

“Obviously, West Ham would fancy their chances, but if he has to move you would think that Tottenham would would tick a lot of boxes. Obviously there’s not many places he could move.”

“I think he’d be a thoroughly welcome addition to Spurs. And Spurs, from my understanding, like him a lot. They are not banking on him because they’re aware of this contract situation. It wouldn’t surprise Tottenham if next week Chelsea offered him a contract and he signs it very quickly.

“So, he is on the radar, but they’re not putting all their eggs in that basket.”

How would Conor Gallagher fit into Tottenham’s midfield?

The main issue facing Spurs ahead of next season is the need for an improved quality to their squad with European football set to be on the menu.

Postecoglou’s midfield has been a real problem area for Spurs with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison all seriously struggling for form.

No matter who the 58-year-old selects in his starting XI, he is struggling to get a tune out of the midfield.

But Gallagher has been one of Chelsea’s few players to actually show some form this season.

Although Gallagher may not provide a massive upgrade in key areas, it is clear the England international has a much more well-rounded game than any of the other Spurs midfielders.

But he has already discussed his desire to remain at his boyhood club this summer. Your move, Chelsea…
