'The structures are very lean': Rohl on the shocking amount of hours he works at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has revealed how many hours he’s been working at the club since taking charge.

Rohl took over at Sheffield Wednesday in October, replacing Xisco Munoz who left the club after a winless start to the 2023/24 season.

Since Rohl arrived though, Sheffield Wednesday’s fortunes have been much brighter, with the Owls having won 16 games in all competitions under Rohl, eventually finishing the season in 20th and with a three-point gap to the bottom three.

Rohl has been hard at work in what is his first managerial job. And speaking to German media this week, he’s revealed that he’s been putting in 80-hour working weeks at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday are notoriously streamlined within their boardroom with owner Dejphon Chansiri overseeing a lot more than the usual football chairman would.

There’s no sporting director, no CEO or COO, and so Rohl has had to pick up the slack, with reports earlier in the season that Rohl was even responsible for overseeing hotel bookings showing just how tight of a ship it is at Sheffield Wednesday.

And speaking to German outlet RBlive, Rohl has now discussed matters behind the scenes, saying: “In Sheffield the structures are very lean.

“There is no sports director or team manager. But I have a great team of trainers who support me very, very well.

“But let’s put it this way: There are easier first positions as a head coach. It takes 70 to 80 hours – easily. The next ones are sometimes short.”

One thing remains key for Dejphon Chansiri

Rohl and Chansiri recently met and have held positive talks regarding Rohl’s future at the club.

The Owls boss wants reassurances about the summer transfer window and also some improvements to the club’s Middlewood training ground, but there’s one other thing that could do Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday a world of good.

A sporting director remains something that could be hugely beneficial to Sheffield Wednesday, with Rohl’s revelation about his working hours shining a light on just how difficult it’s been for him, and how good of a job he’s done.

If there was someone to act as a go-between for Rohl and Chansiri and someone who can have some input in footballing matters then it would take a lot of strain off Rohl and allow him to put more focus on the team.

Whether or not Chansiri would allow that remains to be seen, though. He looks set to continue in what seems like a very hands-on role at the club, though if Sheffield Wednesday can enjoy a positive summer then fans won’t mind who’s making the decision.
