Driver, 87, killed in overnight crash in South Jersey

An 87-year-old man was killed and his 83-year-old passenger seriously injured in a two-vehicle overnight crash Monday in Egg Harbor Township.

The crash took place at about 2:40 a.m. at the intersection of Delaware and Fernwood avenues, Egg Harbor Township police said.

Jovita Catalan stopped at a stop sign while traveling along Fernwood Avenue moments before the crash. As he began to enter the intersection his car was struck on the driver side by an SUV headed west on Delaware Avenue causing both vehicles to spin off the road, officials said.

Catalan, of Egg Harbor Township, died of his injuries at an area hospital. The woman in the front passenger seat was hospitalized with serious injuries. Police didn’t disclose her relationship to Catalan.

The 19-year-old Egg Harbor Township man driving the SUV declined medical treatment. The crash remains under investigation.
