'Gutted...': Sheffield Wednesday player now pens emotional message to fans ahead of summer exit

Lee Gregory has penned an emotional message to Sheffield Wednesday fans after his exit was confirmed.

Born in Sheffield, Lee Gregory returned to his hometown when he joined Sheffield Wednesday back in 2021.

The striker netted 17 goals and provided five assists in his first season in League One, before claiming 17 goal contributions as the Owls were promoted back to the Championship.

Lee Gregory scored vital goals against the likes of Bolton and Exeter City, as well as claiming a goal and an assist in the play-offs.

The 35-year-old played a huge role in Wednesday’s promotion, but was unable to reap the rewards this term.

Gregory managed only ten starts in the Championship and only featured for 69 minutes under Danny Rohl.

He was previously expected to leave the club in January amid interest from Derby County, but remained and hasn’t played a single minute since.

It has now been confirmed that Gregory will leave the club after three years, and he has taken to X to share an emotional message to his supporters.

Lee Gregory was ‘gutted’ about final season at Sheffield Wednesday

He wrote: “I have not been on this for some time now, but I just wanted to say personally from the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone at SWFC.

“This past year has not been what I wanted and how I wanted my career here to finish, I have been gutted about it and wish it was different, as everyone who knows me knows all I wanted to do was play.

“I am so happy the team stayed up because you all deserved it.

“I have had some of the best memories a footballer can get at this club with the promotion last year and that will stay with me forever.

“The game at home against Peterborough was the best atmosphere I have ever seen and been involved in.

“I will be seeing you soon at Hillsborough as my son who’s now a massive fan wants to watch all the games. Thank you.”

Was the striker unfairly treated by Danny Rohl?

Lee Gregory was massive for Sheffield Wednesday last season and was one of the few players who didn’t really get a chance to prove themselves under Rohl.

The forward made eight starts under Xisco Munoz and, like the rest of the squad, struggled.

But when Rohl arrived, he made the match-day squad only five times before he was forced to sit week after week without stepping foot on the pitch.

There can be no real complaints about the way the German handled his time at the club given how successful he actually was, but there should be question marks over how Gregory was treated.

If Ike Ugbo hadn’t enjoyed such an excellent start to life atHillsborough, then perhaps we could have seen the veteran brought back into the team.

But there were times when the side were really struggling for goals and he failed to even make the bench.

Wednesday fans certainly won’t get hung up about it though and there is no doubt that he will go and smash it in League One once again.
