'I think': Pundit now predicts if Lionel Messi can break previously untouchable MLS record at Inter Miami

Matt Doyle has predicted if Lionel Messi can break an MLS record this year previously thought of as untouchable with Inter Miami.

The Argentine international has been immense since returning from injury last month, with Messi leading the MLS goalscoring and assist charts and breaking a new record seemingly every time he steps out onto the pitch.

This weekend saw Messi become the first player in MLS history to register five assists in a 6-2 win against the New York Red Bulls, with the 36-year-old forward also scoring one for himself for Inter Miami.

And Messi has now been tipped to go even further this season than his display on Saturday.

Messi tipped to manage seven goal contributions in a single MLS game

Speaking on MLS Extratime, Doyle made the bold prediction that Messi could register seven goal contributions in a single game, with the pundit also suggesting that Inter Miami could set the record for the biggest win in MLS.

With Messi managing six against a good Red Bulls side on the weekend, it would not be a surprise if the Argentine international can go one step further against a lower-ranked side in MLS, with upcoming games potential fixtures where the forward can make history.

Indeed, Messi is showing form never seen before in MLS, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the former PSG and FC Barcelona superstar managed to beat the goal-contribution record he has already set this season.

Doyle said: “I think pretty strongly, there’s like a 70% chance that he breaks this record this year, that he ends a game with seven-goal contributions. I also think there’s a pretty good chance that Inter Miami break the all-time record for goals in a game, which is eight.”

Messi needs to stay focused in picking up as many Inter Miami wins

Messi’s genius means more records are bound to be broken in the coming games with Inter Miami, yet this should not be the Argentine international’s sole focus on the pitch.

With the Copa America coming up next month, Inter Miami will want Messi to pick up as many wins as possible before the forward is gone for June and July, when the Herons will experience a dip in form.

Whilst records are neat and all, this will not be Messi’s main objective, with wins and getting as many points as possible the main priority for the attacker at Inter Miami.
