Anticipation for her latest albums is always through the roof, and when The Tortured Poets Department was revealed to be a double album, to say Swifities lost their minds wouldn’t quite capture the intensity of emotions surging through millions. Since the lyrically rich album was released, so many theories have emerged. Yet, not one is quite so troubling as the thought of her retirement.

The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology closes with the 31st track The Manuscript, which some have speculated is not only an album capper but a career closer.

A swiftie recently took to social media in reaction to a comment on a video analyzing TTPD. “I feel The Manuscript is about her whole life up until now,” the original commenter theorized. “And I’m slightly worried that she is retiring, or at least taking a long hiatus after the Eras tour.”

Sharing the comment, a Swifite explained: “I saw this comment on a video of people reacting to TTPD. I know she said at one of the shows that she wasn’t going to stop making albums but what do we think about a hiatus?”

The original commenter said it was the song lyrics “One last souvenir from my trip to your shores” that felt to them like Taylor sending a secret message and bidding farewell to the fandom.

The fan who reacted to the theory has conveyed just how much it’s reframed their reading of the song, encouraging them to seek out any other perspectives from the fandom that may put their mind at ease.

One suggested the lyric is a reference to not having to travel to see her ex Joe Alwyn in London anymore, but that’s just one reaction of many…

Jumping in to beef up the discourse surrounding a potential hiatus or unlikely retirement from Taylor, fans reacted to the concerns.

One commented that they believe The Manuscript was written to provide “closure from the prior era of her life, and now she’s ready to embark on the next era or journey.”

Another commented: “She said herself at the Grammys she wants to continue but let’s be honest she needs a break. She’s been non-stop since the pandemic ended.”

Offering another theory, one suggested: “I think she is going to drop an album that makes her feel alive… I feel her remixing her own songs is inspiring her to write like ‘festival’ music of sorts.”
