Derby County fans now all saying the same thing after Peterborough lost in the play-offs

Derby County supporters are now all saying the same thing after Peterborough United lost in the play-off semi-finals against Oxford United.

Derby supporters were glad that a gruelling League One campaign didn’t end in heartbreak for their fans.

The Rams secured promotion back to the Championship after beating Carlisle United 2-0 on the final day. It sparked scenes of jubilation at Pride Park as Paul Warne’s men celebrated promotion for the first time in 17 years.

Warne did an impressive job of acquiring players on a free transfer or loan and leading them to second position in the table, just behind title winners Portsmouth.

Derby didn’t have an easy ride to earn their spot in the second tier as competition for the automatic promotion places was fierce, with as many as five teams chasing the top two spots at one point.

One of those teams was Peterborough United, who were forced to settle for the play-offs.

Derby County fans react to Peterborough losing in the playoffs

Peterborough played the second leg of their League One play-off semi-final against Oxford United last night and Darren Ferguson’s men were beaten 2-1 on aggregate.

Although it was despair for the Posh, several Derby supporters were happy to see them lose in heartbreaking style.

When the Rams lost 3-2 against them on New Year’s Day, some of their fans fired shots at Derby, claiming they’d won the league. But of course, it was Warne’s men who had the last laugh when they finished second.

Reacting to this result via X, here is what Derby fans had to say.

One supporter said: “After winning the league on New Year’s Day, Peterborough will be playing Wrexham and Mansfield next season.”

A second chirped in: “Makes you think. Lots said we wish we played the style of football Peterborough did this season. I’d take the 1-0 scrappy wins and at times boring football and get out of this league.”

A fourth added: “Barnsley & Peterborough both, won the league vs Derby County but neither will play championship football next season.”

A fifth said: “Another team that won the league when they beat us staying in the league below us next season.”

Peterborough players who Derby County can look at

Peterborough boasted arguably the most talented squad of players in League One, but many look poised to depart now and Derby should add further salt to the wounds by trying to poach one or two.

Warne could strengthen his left wing-back position by adding Harrison Burrows to the ranks. He has six goals and 15 assists in the league this term with his contract close to expiring.

Likewise, the Rams could look at signing striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, who also looks set to depart on a free transfer. The 29-year-old scored 12 goals the last time Peterborough were in the Championship and would be a fine addition.

Centre-back Ronnie Edwards is another Derby should look at, but as he’s attracting interest from Premier League clubs, a deal for him looks far out of their reach.
