"I remember": 2024 Golden Boot winner now says Crystal Palace star is the best he's ever played with

For one Crystal Palace star, he’s just been issued huge praise by a former teammate of his while also being tipped for international football.

Since Oliver Glasner took charge at Selhurst Park, several players have seen their stocks rise with the Austrian clearly working wonders.

He’s turned the likes of Jean-Philippe Mateta into a clinical and dangerous number nine, while also resurrecting the careers of Will Hughes and Nathaniel Clyne to name a few.

Glasner has also helped Crystal Palace‘s two winter signings blossom and become vital parts of the Eagles’ form.

Sammie Szmodics has his say on Crystal Palace ace Adam Wharton

The Blackburn star and 2024 Championship Golden Boot winner, Sammie Szmodics, has been speaking on the No Tippy Tappy podcast with Sam Allardyce.

In doing so, he’s discussed his former teammate and current Palace standout Adam Wharton, heaping praise on him.

Szmodics explained that Wharton will “end up being the best player” that he’s played with, before continuing to explain his thoughts on the 20-year-old further.

“There’s questions about him being on the plane for England and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was. He’s a lovely lad. I remember when I first joined, he was just a sulky teenager, that’s how he looked.

“He plays at his own pace but his vision on the turn when he gets the ball… he’ll play for England.”

How many games did Wharton play at Blackburn?

Wharton has taken to Premier League football like a duck to water which would have you thinking he was a seasoned professional.

But this isn’t the case and actually before making the move to Palace in January, he was only in the midst of his first full breakout campaign in the Championship.

In 2022-23 he made just 18 league appearances, which was beaten in 2023-24 despite him leaving in January with 26 appearances before making the step up.

So effectively in a year, Wharton has gone from a prospect who was playing a bit part role for Blackburn, to the hottest midfield prospect in the Premier League.
