'What I've liked': BBC Sport pundit hails Sean Dyche decision during Everton's 1-0 win against Sheffield United

BBC Sport pundit Fara Williams has praised Everton boss Sean Dyche for a decision he made during the Toffees’ 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

The victory over the Blades is Everton’s fifth straight home triumph and ends their season at Goodison Park on a high.

Abdoulaye Doucoure was the matchwinner for the hosts, finding the back of the net after a fine piece of work from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, an assist that was lauded by Sue Smith on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

Everton have now amassed 40 points and will end their season at Arsenal next Sunday.

Doucoure was deployed in a more advanced role against Chris Wilder’s side, and the decision to offer more support to Calvert-Lewin paid off, with both players combining for the winner.

Speaking on BBC Sport 5 Live’s coverage, Williams was particularly impressed with the tactical tweak from Dyche.

“What I’ve liked about this Everton team this afternoon is that they’ve got Doucoure playing a little bit higher alongside Calvert-Lewin,” she explained.

“I think it actually helps Calvert-Lewin because it’s actually him that makes the run from deeper, and then there was Doucoure left in the box. It was a simple header; he shouldn’t be unmarked in the box, but it was a well-worked goal from Everton.”

Three weeks to savour for Evertonians

The win over the Blades was the perfect way to end Everton’s season at Goodison Park.

Three points cap what has been a brilliant three weeks for the Toffees, who were staring down the barrel after their 6-0 humbling against Chelsea.

Dyche deserves immense credit for how he’s steadied the ship. Off-the-field issues – still ongoing – threatened to pull Everton into the Championship. This remarkable run of form is down to hard work and belief in the 52-year-old’s ideas.

With no sign of a takeover imminent and Kevin Thelwell making a concerning transfer admission, it’s unclear what the future holds.

But, keeping hold of Dyche and the core of the squad could stand the club in good stead ahead of the 2024/25 season.
