Luton Town player says ‘world-class’ Man City star is the toughest he’s played against this season

Luton Town midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu has named one Manchester City player as being the toughest opponent he’s faced this season.

After beating Coventry City on penalties in the previous Championship Play-Off final last year, the Hatter secured their place in the Premier League for this season.

However, having spent most of the campaign in the relegation zone, there is a chance Rob Edwards’s side will be back in the Championship next term.

Now though, one of the Luton players has been sharing his thoughts on who some of the hardest individual opponents he’s had to come up against have been this season, with one City figure being mentioned.

In a recent video shared on the Sky Sports Premier League, Mpanzu had this to say when asked to name who the toughest opponent he’s come up against has been this season.

He said: “Either Martin Odegaard or Kevin De Bruyne. Quality, world-class players. They are doing well for their clubs and their countries, so one of those two.

“I would probably say Kevin De Bruyne just a little bit. He can pass, he can score, he has got the vision, he can make runs off the ball, he is doing well with [Erling] Haaland, he is setting each other up, so Kevin De Bruyne, yeah.”

De Bruyne has terrorised Luton this season

Mpanzu has come up against De Bruyne on two occasions this season, the 6-2 defeat to City at Kenilworth Road in the FA Cup and then the 5-1 Premier League defeat at the Etihad Stadium last month.

In the FA Cup game, the Belgian racked up four assists on the night, which was then followed by him making seven key passes in the league game between the two sides in April.

This makes it easy to see why Mpanzu, who probably isn’t alone in having a tough time playing against the City star, has named the 32-year-old as one of the hardest individual opponents he’s come up against in what has undoubtedly been a tough season for Luton.
