Arrest made in shooting death of 62-year-old Paterson man

Paterson police announced Saturday an arrest connected tothe shooting death of a 62-year-old Paterson man earlier in the week.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Isa Abbassi of the Paterson Police Department announced that Jimmy Mercedes, a 39-year-old from Paterson, was arrested May 10. Mercedes was charged with first degree murder, second degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and second degree certain person not to possess a weapon.

Mercedes’ arrest comes after Daryle Robinson was shot the morning of May 5 in the area of Broadway and East 24th Street in Paterson. Robinson was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment but died May 7.

The Paterson Police Department Shooting Investigation Unit and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office’s investigation found Mercedes to be responsible for the shooting. Mercedes surrendered himself to police the morning of May 10.

First degree murder has a sentencing range of 30 years to life imprisonment. Second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose both have a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison with 42 months to be served before parole eligibility in accordance with the Graves Act. Second degree certain person not to possess a weapon has a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in prison with 5 years to be served before parole eligibility.
