Micky van de Ven sends two-word message to James Maddison after Tottenham Hotspur win

Tottenham Hotspur produced another home comeback by beating Burnley in the penultimate home game of the season.

Ange Postecoglou needed a victory after losing four games in a row but Tottenham didn’t exactly start well against Burnley.

The Clarets took a first-half lead with Jacob Bruun Larsen firing the visitors in front.

Tottenham pulled off a rather familiar comeback though with Pedro Porro levelling it up.

Micky van de Ven then won it after the break, finding the net with a superb left-footed effort.

Spurs have repeatedly pulled off comebacks at home this season but this one felt especially important.

One point from five games would have felt like a major disappointment but getting back to winning ways was a real relief.

Micky van de Ven on James Maddison

The two goals came from rather unexpected sources.

Tottenham’s attacking players have been out of form for a little while now, but defenders Porro and Van de Ven stepped up with two fine goals.

The winner came thanks to Van de Ven as he took a James Maddison pass in his stride and slotted home.

Maddison hasn’t quite been at his best since his injury back in November but he was a real threat against Burnley.

The pass from Maddison was really fired into Van de Ven, allowing him to take a touch away from the Burnley defence and even run around the ball to finish on his left foot.

Maddison took to Instagram to post a message thanking Tottenham fans for their support throughout the campaign.

Van de Ven responded by saying just two words – ‘top pass’.

The centre back clearly appreciated Maddison’s assist and gave the Spurs playmaker the credit he deserves.

Maddison performance by the numbers

Tottenham fans have been waiting to see Maddison get back to his best for a while now.

There have been moments of quality but not quite at the same rate as we saw earlier in the season.

Maddison was better on Saturday though, recording three key passes – including one for Van de Ven’s goal.

Maddison had one shot on target, forcing Arijanet Muric into a decent save, whilst also recording three accurate crosses and two completed dribbles, as well as one tackle.

Signed from Leicester City last summer, Maddison is now looking to gain some momentum ahead of Euro 2024.

Maddison’s spot in the England squad certainly isn’t secure and he needs performances – and assists – like the one against Burnley to nail down his place under Gareth Southgate.
