Violent weekend in Jersey City: Stabbing and shooting incident follow homicide

A man was stabbed and struck in the head with a hammer early Sunday morning, capping a violent weekend in Jersey City.

The victim was taken to a local hospital after the incident just after midnight Saturday in the area of Stuyvesant and Romaine avenues, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. He is in critical but stable condition.

It is believed the man was injured during an altercation with a man he knew. Police recovered a hammer at the scene, Wallace-Scalcione said.

Late Friday night a man was shot dead, found behind the wheel of car that crashed into a gate and small wall on Pearsall Avenue, between Garfield and Princeton avenues. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the incident.

A few hours later, Jersey City police received reports that a man had been shot, perhaps in the area of Summit and Sip avenues in Journal Square, or on the other end of Sip Avenue, near Route 1&9.

Police investigating said they spoke with the driver of a gray Range Rover, which they saw in the southbound lane of Route 1&9 near Sip Avenue with damage to the front right tire, Wallace-Sclalcione said.

The driver said he was being fired upon at the time of the incident. Police impounded the vehicle after they found the Range Rover had fictitious temporary New York license plates. The driver refused to cooperate with police and refused medical attention. The investigation is ongoing.
