Authorities arrest man charged with fatal stabbing at NJ Transit station

The suspect in a fatal stabbing at a New Jersey Transit train station during the summer of 2023 has been arrested in Pennsylvania.

Aswad J. Spruiel, 44, of Plainfield, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, on Friday. He was previously charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses, the Union County Prosecutors Office said on Monday.

Police found the victim, 45-year-old Juquin Smith, suffering from stab wounds at Plainfield Station around 2 p.m. on July 6, 2023, officials said. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Prosecutors did not say how Spruiel was identified as a suspect. Court records indicate that a warrant was issued for his arrest on July 14.

He is being held in Northumberland County Jail in Pennsylvania and is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

Attorney information for Spruiel was not immediately available.
