Couple embrace love of retro to shine light on lamps and novelties

The owners of an upcycling and pre-loved business in the gardens of a popular pub hope the summer will herald in a bright future for the venture.

Steve and Sandra Bishop took the plunge and opened Retro Pimp at The Half Moon Inn in Rushall in March.

The fledgling business specialises in bespoke, upcycled lamps and a range of antique items, including china, glassware, militaria and tools.

Mrs Bishop told the Diss Express it was an opportunity the pair could not turn down.

“Justin and Keighly, who run the pub, opened it at around the same time that we moved to the village,” she said. “At first, Keighly used the building to sell her antiques, but, as the pub got busier, she shut the shop.

“So we suggested that we take it on, selling a mix of our stuff and hers.”

Interest has slowly grown and Mr Bishop said feedback had been really positive so far.

“Some people have remarked how unusual it is to find an antique shop like this,” he said.

“I recommend that people should walk around twice as they will always find something interesting that they missed the first time.”

Mr Bishop, who is an electrician, said he was passionate about turning unusual items into lamps.

The 60-year-old said: “I just sold one which was an old brass fire extinguisher.

“For me, it is about giving new life to something for someone else to enjoy.

“I really appreciate the history of the other items we have, and I love that others do, too.”

With the weather getting better, the pair hope this will translate into more interest.

Mrs Bishop said: “With the farm, a caravan park, the pub and its garden getting busier, this will hopefully mean more people coming into the shop.”

Retro Pimp is currently open on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 6pm, and by appointment.
