Man who robbed N.J Best Buy at knifepoint sentenced to long prison term

A New Jersey man with a long criminal history has been sentenced to 28 years in state prison for robbing a Best Buy at knifepoint two years ago.

Michael Guirguis, 39, of Jersey City, will have to serve at least 23 years, nine months before he eligible for parole, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Guirguis walked into Best Buy on Route 10 in East Hanover on May 28, 2022, and removed $4,500 worth of iPads and iPhones from a display table, officials said.

When a security guard tried to stop Guirguis on his way out, he pulled a knife. Guirguis then showed the knife to another person when he left the store.

Guirguis was in the parking lot with the stolen goods when police arrived. He didn’t stop when ordered and was arrested “by force,” the prosecutor’s office said.

He was convicted in March of robbery, shoplifting, weapons offenses and resisting arrest.

Guirguis had eight criminal convictions as of November 2022.
