Students, driver escape school bus that burst into flames, police say

A school bus caught fire in Sayreville on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

Seven occupants of a school bus, including its driver and several students, were able to escape after it caught fire Tuesday afternoon in Sayreville, police said.

A witness told NJ Advance Media the bus had just dropped off a student when it caught fire.

The incident was reported to police at 3:55 p.m., authorities said. Police officers rushed to Louis Street to assist, according to a statement from the Sayreville Police Department.

All of the occupants were able to get off the bus safely and arrangements were made to get the students back to their homes, the department said.

A photo of the charred remains of the bus showed it said Sayreville Board of Education on the side but it was unclear what school the bus was servicing.

The district could not immediately be reached for comment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
