'There's a lot of factors...': Liam Palmer opens up on his Sheffield Wednesday future

Sheffield Wednesday veteran Liam Palmer has discussed his future at the club.

Palmer, 32, goes into this summer with 436 total appearances for Sheffield Wednesday to his name, with 34 of those coming in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

The versatile former Owls academy man was in and out of the side during the earlier parts of the campaign but became a mainstay under Danny Rohl in the second half of the season.

There were only three games in 2024 where Palmer didn’t feature. He started the final six games too, scoring crucial goals in games against Stoke City and on the final day of the season against Sunderland.

Palmer though is out of contract in the summer, along with names like Barry Bannan and Josh Windass among several others.

Bannan has already suggested that he’s set to stay at Hillsborough whilst Windass has revealed that his agent is in talks with the club regarding his next steps.

And now Palmer has discussed his future too.

Liam Palmer discusses Sheffield Wednesday future

Speaking to Football Heaven, Palmer revealed that his representatives are finalising his future at the club, but he failed to comment on whether he’ll be staying or leaving.

Palmer said: “I think it was probably the right thing for the club to look at what division we’d be in, there’s a lot of factors around their decision.

“I’ll leave it up to my representatives to speak to the club and hopefully get something sorted pretty quickly.”

Palmer made his league debut for the Owls way back in the 2010/11 season. He’s become a huge fan favourite and a source of some important goals too, scoring the crucial equaliser in the memorable play-off comeback vs Peterborough United last season.

One factor that may keep Liam Palmer at Sheffield Wednesday

Windass previously revealed that he and some of his teammates are waiting to see what happens with Rohl this summer, before committing their own future.

And Palmer may be the same; he really started to shine under Rohl this season, with Rohl eventually discovering Palmer’s ability to play in numerous positions, and his ability to score important goals too.

Rohl will need to maintain experienced players like Palmer this summer with Sheffield Wednesday surely looking to bring in a horde of younger players to start laying foundations for the future.

There’s reportedly talks over a new contract for Rohl and if he stays, it could kickstart a lot of positive changes in S6, with Palmer staying potentially one of them.
