'I feel': James Maddison gives latest fitness update on himself after Tottenham vs Man City

James Maddison shared an update on his fitness after Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Manchester City.

The 27-year-old has endured a difficult run of form since returning from an ankle injury back in January.

It led to James Maddison dropping to the bench in the defeats at Chelsea and Liverpool, with concerns over the Tottenham star’s fitness.

Maddison returned to the starting line-up in the 2-1 win over Burnley on Saturday and set up Micky van de Ven for the winning goal.

The Englishman put in another improved display against Manchester City on Tuesday evening before being replaced by debutant Mikey Moore in the 92nd minute.

Now, Maddison has claimed he feels ‘good’ and is back to full fitness ahead of Spurs’ last-day trip to Sheffield United.

Maddison shares update on his fitness after Tottenham vs Man City

Speaking to Spurs’ media team following last night’s defeat, Maddison explained the importance of getting 90 minutes under his belt against City.

“I feel good,” the Tottenham star said. “Last couple of games I felt good. I think it will do me the world of good that I have played almost 90 minutes in both the last two games.

“But I always want to improve on numbers. Goals, assists, everything. I’ve had a long injury so have missed a lot of games. But I feel good. I feel fit.

“Off the back of today I was disappointed for the team more than anything, I felt like I did alright. There was spaces and pockets of space out there and I felt like we were getting success with the system, so quite frustrating actually.”

The numbers behind Maddison’s dip in form

Maddison lit up the Premier League in his first 10 league games at Spurs, earning the Player of the Month award in August.

The England star had a hand in eight goals in 11 appearances before suffering an ankle injury in the 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea back in November.

Since his return in January, he’s managed just three assists and one goal in 16 league games.

Maddison’s dip in form has reportedly left people at Tottenham confused and the midfielder himself admitted he hadn’t been at his best just last month.

A short spell on the bench seems to have rejuvenated Maddison somewhat and based on the statistics alone, he was Tottenham’s second-best player last night.

Sofascore handed the midfielder a 7.5 match rating, with only Brennan Johnson (7.6) scoring higher.
