Report: Spurs want to sign player who recently scored cup final winner to win his club their first trophy since 1935

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his ranks.

Spurs started the season brightly and were even dark horses for the Premier League title at one point, but now Europa League qualification is the best they can hope for.

Tottenham have nonetheless progressed as a team, playing much better football and getting some good results, but there’s obviously a lot of work to do.

Now, Spurs are reported to be looking at a 26-year-old defender who recently scored the winner in a cup final, helping his team to glory.

The player in question is Union Saint-Giloise’s Koki Machida, and according to Walfoot, Tottenham are interested in him.

The Belgian outlet also carries quotes from the Japan international in which he effectively rules out playing in Serie A as ‘it doesn’t work very well for the Japanese’.

“I don’t really know why Serie A doesn’t suit us,” said Machida. “Too tactical, too defensive, maybe.”

Although the 6ft 3in ace seemingly favours a move to the Bundesliga, the report also names the Premier League as a competition he’s interested in.

A recent report from Voetbal Krant claimed Union SG value Machida at €15million (around £13million).

Tottenham could sign yet another gem in Koki Machida

Postecoglou has made a name for himself in recent years when it comes to unearthing gems and turning them into stars.

Machida looks like a good shout for Tottenham. At 26 years old, he’s entering his prime, and his talent, attitude and physicality make him a good candidate for the Premier League.

In addition, Machida has shown he can rise up to the big occasions. Just this month, he scored the winner to help Union SG win the Belgian Cup against Antwerp, their first trophy since 1935.

For a big Premier League club like Tottenham, £13million is a pretty modest fee. Let’s see whether they intensify their interest and potentially make a bid in the summer transfer window.
