‘That was a big day’: Callum McGregor identifies the key moment that inspired Celtic to go and win the league

There has been many games this season that the Celtic fans could identify as season-defining moments.

For me, the 2-1 Hibs game was the game that ultimately kept Celtic in the title race. That win did two things for Celtic that night.

Two Adam Idah penalties rescued two precious points from the capital for Brendan Rodgers but it also gave the on-loan Norwich City striker a massive confidence boost in his first outing in a Celtic jersey.

Idah then went on to score important goals against Motherwell and Rangers which also had a massive bearing on Celtic retaining the title.

However, Callum McGregor has a different game in mind and it will be one that my well surprise the Celtic support.

The Rangers game that inspired Celtic to become champions

The Celtic captain was looking back at the season after the 5-0 Kilmarnock win last night and he was asked which moment over the last few months he felt was crucial to Celtic’s big title win.

McGregor said [Sky Sports], It’s just been a combination of small wins and building, building, building. I think probably the game at Ibrox.

“We spent so much in the game. We went two up then we go two each and then 3-2 up and we obviously lose the one at the end.

“I felt that was a big day in terms of us believing that you can go there and play and be in a hostile environment and stick to your football and then when the game gets tough you show your resilience to see it out as well.

“I think that’s a big day and since then we have really motored and kicked on and we just need to stay there.”

Like I said (that was very Brendan Rodgers-y!) there were many moments in this season where the Celtic fans could say it turned the league in Celtic’s favour.

But what I like about McGregor’s is that this was a game that Rangers knew they had to win to pull away from Celtic.

If the Ibrox club won that game then they would have pulled eight points ahead. But drawing a must-win game clearly had an adverse affect on them.

They subsequently lost at Ross County and drew with Dundee and as the Ibrox club’s bottle crashed, Celtic were resurgent and have won every other game since then to eventually win the league.
