Report: Newcastle might now be able to sign 'exceptional' Leeds United player for £30m

Newcastle United will have a close eye on the Championship playoffs, as Leeds United target an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Magpies are lining up their summer transfer plans and deciding what positions to prioritise, with Eddie Howe needing to add a top quality winger to his Newcastle United squad.

He needs someone who can compliment Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak, with Michael Olise recently linked with a big money move to St James’ Park.

But he is not the only attacker who the Magpies have got on their radar, and they could have a chance to sign a player who has taken the Championship by storm this season.

Leeds United need to raise money if they do not get promoted

Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville has been named the Championship Player Of The Season, but he might not be in the second tier for much longer.

That is because Daniel Farke’s side are aiming to win promotion, and face Norwich City in their playoff semi final second leg on Thursday night.

If Leeds win, they will head to Wembley for the final, as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. But if they lose, the Yorkshire club could find themselves in financial bother.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that Leeds will need to raise around £100million through player sales if they fail to win promotion.

And that is why Newcastle United might have a chance to sign Summerville.

Newcastle United linked with Crysencio Summerville

The Magpies were linked with Summerville during the January transfer window, while it was reported last month that Newcastle could make a move this summer.

Now the Daily Mail have provided an update, stating that Newcastle are one of the Premier League clubs that have been watching Summerville this season.

They add that the 22-year-old is Leeds’ most saleable asset, and will cost a fee in excess of £30million.

Summerville has been spectacular this season

That is a lot of money for a Championship player, but it is a testament to how good he has been this season.

The Dutchman scored 19 league goals for Leeds, while he also chipped in with nine assists. His numbers have been an outstanding, and he is a player who Michael Owen previously described as ‘exceptional’.

Whether Leeds go up or not, Summerville looks destined to play in the Premier League again next season.

And Newcastle could give him that opportunity, as they go in search of attacking reinforcements. Summerville ticks a lot of boxes for the Magpies, given the fact he is young and versatile.

However, he is predominantly a left-sided attacker, where Newcastle already have Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes. Interestingly, Summerville actually has the same agency as the latter, which may help Toon officials broker a deal if they do decide to make a move.
