Jurgen Klopp reveals the reason he ‘doesn’t like’ Tottenham’s James Maddison

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has now revealed why he does not like Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison.

Tottenham faced the German manager for the final time at Anfield just a couple of weeks ago with Klopp walking away from football after the weekend.

It was not a result that Ange Postecoglou‘s side will look back on fondly having found themselves 4-0 down before being able to score two consolation goals.

However, James Maddison did not even start in the game at Anfield with the midfielder struggling for form of late.

But as the German heads towards the exit doors at Liverpool, he has sat down and shared some stories from his time in the Premier League.

And one of them involves the 27-year-old Spurs midfielder who Klopp has admitted he holds something against.

Why Jurgen Klopp does not like James Maddison

Having landed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the summer, it has been an up-and-down season for Maddison.

The injury picked up last year has seriously hindered his campaign with the Englishman struggling to get back to his best.

But there have been some signs recently of his rediscovering his form with just one game now remaining in the season.

But it is not something that has happened recently that has led to Klopp not being Maddison’s biggest fan.

Speaking to Redmen TV ahead of his Anfield departure, Klopp revealed it was Maddison’s involvement in the 2018/19 win for Manchester City over Leicester that annoyed him.

“I was on the sofa like: ‘Maddison, Maddison, block him [Vincent Kompany], close him down!’ — since then I don’t like Maddison!

“And I was angry with Brendan [Rodgers] that day because he should have taken him [Maddison] off because he was tired.

“Leicester played really good in the first half and after that, they should have scored. So it’s just a personal thing, of course, I’ve got no problem with the club, but I saw him again last [5 May] weekend…”

James Maddison has admitted he’s feeling more like himself again

The injury picked up earlier in the season really derailed Maddison’s season with the England international struggling to find any kind of consistency since.

The last two games have looked a lot more like the Maddison that Spurs fans saw in the earlier stages of the season.

He picked up an assist for Micky van de Ven in the win over Burnley and the midfielder looked like a threat against Manchester City.

After the game on Tuesday night, the 27-year-old told the Spurs media team that he is starting to feel more like himself again on the pitch.

“I feel good. Last couple of games I felt good. I think it will do me the world of good that I have played almost 90 minutes in both the last two games,” he said.

“But I always want to improve on numbers. Goals, assists, everything. I’ve had a long injury so have missed a lot of games. But I feel good. I feel fit.”
