Hearts v Rangers player ratings: 3/10 stinks again as 8/10 dynamo shines

Rangers final fixture of the 2023/24 league season against Hearts saw Philippe Clement hoping to maintain winning ways ahead of a trip to Hampden next weekend.

The manager still has a depleted squad, but it was a chance for some of the players who haven’t featured as often to stake a cup final claim.

Here are your Rangers player ratings for the trip along the M8 to the capital with a team featuring a younger looking line-up.

Rangers player ratings v Dundee

Philippe Clement had an entire starting XI not fully fit or injured but here are the ratings for those that aren’t in the treatment room:

Jack Butland – 6

Stitched up by his defence again for all three of Hearts goals.

Made a couple of impressive saves to keep Hearts out.

James Tavernier – 4

Not been as influential lately and needs to improve his contribution in open play.

Switched off on too many occasions and was largely at fault for the home side’s second.

Robbie Fraser – 5

Excellent start to the game on his full debut with a series of strong, agressive tackles and set-piece deliveries.

Calm and composed in possession.

Slipped in a one v one against Oda and seemed to affect his confidence against the winger.

Ben Davies – 6

Handled Shankland well to the extent that the Scotland international kept moving to try and sit on Leon King.

Midfield exposed the centre-halves for Hearts opener and little the two defenders could do.

Leon King – 6

As with Davies, defended well and couldn’t do much with opening goal after being left in no man’s land.

Nicolas Raskin – 7

Lost possession a couple of times but it was at least when he was trying to drive Rangers forwards.

Played at pace and with determination, has done his chances of a cup final start no harm.

Todd Cantwell – 8

Cost his side the opening goal with a lazy lay off that saw the whole defence exposed.

Great defensive block denied a spectacular second for Rangers before cooly slotting his eighth of the season.

Mohamed Diomande – 8

Much better.

Was pressing harder and higher up the park, and looked more like the player who will cost the club £4.3m.

Scott Wright – 4

Rinse and repeat.

Everytime he comes off the bench and does well, he gets rewarded with a start and then offers nothing.

Cyriel Dessers – 3

Looked to have had his shirt pulled in the box early on but Don Robertson waved away his claims.

Missed a great chance to open the scoring but Ross McCausland’s square pass could have been better.

Things idn’t get any better and missed a series of makeable opportunities which sums up his season, doesn’t get any credit for Todd Cantwell’s goal either because it was a shocker of a pass.

Ross McCausland – 8

Worked his way into the game and got into some good positions, should have shot or played a square pass to Dessers, instead, it went behind the striker and he couldn’t get a clean connection.

Stunning goal to level the scores, hopefully he kicks on from here.

Substitutes

Fabio Silva – 7

Drew a fine stop from Zander Clark and Cantwell was unlucky with the rebound.

Got his goal with a cute turn and low finish.

Kieran Dowell – 6

Busy in midfield, offered a good balance and played some neat passes to the front three.

Ridvan Yilmaz – 6

Looked keen to get forward and attack and the minutes will be invaluable for next week.

Could have done better with Hearts second and third.

Dujon Sterling – 6

Had a scare when he grabbed Kenneth Vargas’ hand but the Hearts winger’s dive didn’t do himself any favours.

Abdallah Sima – 5

Fantastic to see the Sengalese international back on the pitch ahead of the Scottish Cup final.
