Eiran Cashin compares Derby County gem to Steven Gerrard after recent club announcement

Eiran Cashin has compared one Derby County gem to Steven Gerrard after his recent announcement.

Derby County announced their retained list at the weekend, three weeks after confirming their place in the Championship for next season.

Six first-team players are set to depart the club, with Joe Wildsmith’s inclusion coming as a huge surprise after picking up the League One Golden Glove award.

Dwight Gayle, Conor Hourihane, Scott Loach, Korey Smith and Martyn Waghorn will also leavePride Park on free transfers.

Derby are also making changes to their academy too, with nine U21s players leaving the club, while midfielder Darren Robinson has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract.

The 19-year-old joined the Rams from Dungannon Swifts in 2021 and has come up through the ranks, making his senior debut the following year.

Robinson hasn’t made a league appearance since the 2021-22 season though, while he has instead been a regular in the Premier League 2 and has been named on the first-team bench on 14 occasions.

Darren Robinson compared to Liverpool legend

Following the announcement, Robinson shared his delight on Instagram, writing: “Delighted to sign a new deal with @dcfcofficial. The hard work continues.”

The teenager was then inundated with messages of support from his teammates, with Eiran Cashin even comparing him to Steven Gerrard.

As well as the defender’s complimentary comparison, a number of his other senior teammates also congratulated him.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing wrote: “Congratulations mate.”

Kane Wilson wrote: “Well deserved bro.”

Liam Thompson, who also extended his stay this month, wrote: “Well done mate.”

Louie Sibley wrote: “Love it you! Congrats!”

Derby County need to keep hold of their top talent

Darren Robinson joins a long list of Derby County academy graduates looking to make it big, and he is probably at one of the best places in the EFL to do so.

The Rams have endured some misery in recent years, but there is no denying that they have brought some brilliant talent through the ranks.

Max Bird is one promising young player who has left the club this summer, while the likes of Sibley, Cashin, Morgan Whittaker, Jason Knight and Max Lowe are some of their other success stories.

The Rams next step is to be able to keep hold of their rising stars, as their place in League One meant it was hard to compete with some of the bigger clubs.

Robinson signing a new deal is a promising sign, while Paul Warne will also be desperate to keep hold of Dajaune Brown, who has recently caught the eye due to his excellent loan spell with Gateshead.
