Newbury man Byron Griffin ‘tried to import firearm’ in Hungerford

A MAN has been charged with fraudulently attempting to evade a prohibition on the importation of firearms in Hungerford.

Byron Griffin appeared at Reading Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 9.

The 60-year-old, of Fair Close in Newtown Road, Newbury, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

It was said that on September 13, 2021, in Hungerford he had been knowingly been concerned in a fraudulent attempt at evasion of a prohibition on the importation of prohibited weapons.

Rob Jacques representing Mr Griffin, said: “This is an allegation that, three years ago, he tried to import a firearm.”

He did not indicate a plea to the charge and the magistrates heard the case needed to be sent to Reading Crown Court.

A plea and trial preparation hearing was scheduled for May 7 and Mr Griffin was released on unconditional bail.
