A suspected drunken driver was arrested Saturday night after plowing into a large group of pedestrians in Michigan, killing two people and injuring 14 others, all of whom belong to the same family.
The collision occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday in the area of South Wacousta Road near Corrison Road in Watertown Township, a suburb northwest of Lansing, according to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office. The driver struck pedestrians who were walking along the shoulder of the road, then fled the scene.
Deputies arrived to find two pedestrians deceased at the scene. Fourteen other pedestrians were transported to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.
On Sunday, the sheriff's office, confirmed all of the victims were "known to each other as family." The deceased victims were described as a 30-year-old man from Grand Haven and a 42-year-old man from Grand Ledge. The hospitalized victims ranged in age from 2 to 61, with eight of them age 16 or younger.
The sheriff's office said Sunday that so far eight victims had been released from the hospital. One remained in critical condition.
The suspect, who was not identified but was described as a 35-year-old woman from the Perrinton area, was stopped by deputies several miles from the scene of the collision and taken into custody.
The crash remains under investigation, but the sheriff's office said alcohol was believed to be a factor.
