'Nobody had actually watched him': TalkSPORT pundit claims Chelsea never did their research on £62m player

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have made a lot of big-money signings.

However, not all of them have impressed one pundit it seems.

Chelsea‘s list of expensive arrivals under their new ownership includes the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk.

Following their arrivals at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo and Fernandez are now the two most expensive signings in the club’s history.

Mudryk also makes the top 10 after his move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Martin Keown questions Chelsea’s scouting

Arsenal legend Martin Keown spoke on talkSPORT (20/05/2024 at 12:29) about a couple of Chelsea’s recent acquisitions.

One was Cole Palmer, the other, Mudryk. And the pundit feels that not much scouting, if any at all, was done on the latter.

Discussing the winger, he said: “If you look at Mudryk, it was almost like they bought him on Wyscout. Nobody had actually watched him play.

“I do not think actually that he is the finished article, but Cole Palmer has actually dragged that club through, and he has done it with the help of the manager, identifying the best place to play him and then get that on the pitch. That’s [Mauricio] Pochettino.”

Mykhailo Mudryk can improve under Mauricio Pochettino

Mudryk is certainly not the finished article and has not lived up to his price tag.

Chelsea signed Mudryk from Shakhtar in an initial £62m deal that could rise to £89m. Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, the Ukrainian has scored just seven goals.

However, Mudryk is still only 23. There is no reason why he cannot get better under Pochettino.

This season, the Argentine has once again proven that he can help young players to improve. You just have to look at Palmer’s performances, for example.

He finished the Premier League campaign with 33 goal contributions in 33 appearances for Chelsea. That does not mean Mudryk is going to do the same one season, but it shows that attacking players can thrive under Pochettino.
